SoundPost: headphones that behave
A small menu bar app that fixes the four things about AirPods and headphones on a Mac that annoyed me most.
AirPods are great with an iPhone. On a Mac they're a little less great: they wander off to other devices, they suddenly sound like a phone call, and the play key sometimes wakes up the wrong app. SoundPost is the menu bar app I wrote to fix that, one annoyance at a time.
What it fixes
- Getting your AirPods back from the iPhone. Each pair of headphones gets its own menu bar icon and an optional hotkey. One click and the sound moves over. More on that.
- Muddy music when something touches the mic. SoundPost keeps your Mac's own mic as the input, so headphones stay at full 48 kHz quality. Meeting apps still get the headphone mic when they need it. Why this happens.
- ▶︎ opening Apple Music. Media keys go to the app that last played, Spotify included. How it works.
- One loud app. Turn one app down, or mute it, without touching the rest. Per-app volume.
It also shows battery at a glance: the lowest bud level sits next to the icon, and left, right and case are in the menu.
Which headphones work
AirPods, Beats and other Bluetooth headphones and speakers. Battery levels show for devices that report them to macOS. SoundPost needs macOS 14.4 or later and runs on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
Try it
Every feature is free for 14 days, with no account and no card. After that it's €9 once for one Mac, or €29 for five Macs while the launch offer runs. All 1.x updates are included.
